As a 68W combat medic what will I be looking to expect?

I really want to do Infantry but, later on I want to be a firefighter. I know this MOS would be the better choice for that but, as especially a line medic do you hang with the infantry guys and get to shoot in fire fights or do you just wait around for someone to get hurt? I don't want to just be bored stuck in a hopital or anything so is this realistic at all?
